Activities of the Project on Islam in Eurasia
The Project has two main objectives: To achieve a better understanding of the ways that the role of Islam is changing in Eurasia today, and to convey that understanding to a wide audience — particularly to those who can use it to help solve practical problems. Details of the main activities of the Project aimed at achieving these objectives may be found by following the links below:
- Research — The Project's team is conducting research in a number of areas across Eurasia with the goals of understanding both the region's diversity as well as the commonalties stemming from common Soviet experience, the common culture of Islam, and the links that connect this region internally and with the broader Islamic world. The research focuses on the life of local communities, and is primarily ethnographic, though we draw also on all available sources to understand the national and interational contexts.
- Conferences — The Project will hold two main conferences. The first, “The Changing Social Role of Islam in Post-Soviet Eurasia,” is planned for March 19-21, 2009. The second will be focused on policy implications, and is planned for the third year of the project. We anticipate holding other conferences as well, most likely in cooperation with colleagues and institutions in the region.
- Presentations — In line with the Project's goal of promoting informed public discourse about Islam in Eurasia, one of the Project's key activities is to present information and analysis on this topic in a variety of public forums.
- Press Contacts — As one of the Project's primary goals is to promote a better understanding of Islam's diversity and changing role in Eurasia among the wider public, we make our expertise and information available to all branches of the press on issues related to Islam in Eurasia, the Muslims of Eurasia, their cultures and societies, and the political issues they are facing.
